Heavy Legs Symptoms and Remedy

This article was written as a response to the question:

Heavy legs syndrome is generally understood as a medical condition in which a person feels heaviness and pain in legs. Heavy legs syndrome --- a venous disease, results due to Chronic Venous Insufficiency also called as CVI. It is also described as ‘tired legs’. The cause of restless legs is known to be venous insufficiency.

Oxygen rich blood is supplied by the arteries from heart to the entire body, simultaneously while veins return the blood that is lacking oxygen back to heart. CVI is a condition when the veins in legs fail to pump enough blood back to the heart and is also known as chronic venous disease. This condition results in weakening of the veins and thus the veins lose the ability to pump the blood effectively. Heavy legs are basically one of the symptoms of CVI.

Symptoms

Swelling may occur in legs and ankles. The person feels tired and complaints of fatigue. Due to poor blood circulation, the blood in the upper region of the body is under lower pressure as compared to the lower region of the body. This results in developing more pressure in the legs and feet causing heavy sensation. It is usually called as hydrostatic pressure and is measured in mmHg. The high pressure that has build up in the lower section of the body prevents the fresher blood from entering the muscle tissue causing ache and fatigue. Symptoms also include cold feet in many cases.

The legs actually need to pump the blood properly back to the heart and this process is named as Venous pumping. The walls of the veins are elastic in nature and many of the veins have valves that are smaller and allow the flow of blood in one direction but when the muscles of the leg contract, they push inward against the walls of the vein. It in turn squeezes the blood in the upwards direction, while opening the valves and helping the blood to move fluently towards the heart. Contrary to this, when the muscles of the legs relax, the walls of the veins also relax while the valves of the veins inside the vein close so to prevent the blood from flowing back.

Venous pump works best when the person is walking and while the person walks the leg muscles contract but when a person sits down, the pressure of blood in the veins of the leg builds up. The blood pressure of the person should be monitored carefully as the extended periods of increased pressure can affect the walls of veins. Continuous increase in the blood pressure could damage the walls of the veins.

Remedy

Heavy legs syndrome may be treated by a light exercise daily as it will help to reduce high pressures in the lower part of the body. Raising the legs and then letting them go down by themselves is also quite helpful for treating the tired legs. The light leg exercise involves a person to lay flat on the back while keeping one leg at a time elevated by going through a full range of motion a few time a day with the help of any physiotherapist or if the patient is able to by him self can also help in increasing the circulation and would help in reliving from pain.

Wear stockings and compression clothing to relieve pain.

Light massage also helps the tired legs. Massage with a stimulating or venotonic cream starting from the foot sole to the ankles and ending up to the knees and hips.

All treatments should be supervised in the presence of the medical consultant.

Avoid

Heavy Legs syndrome worsens due to high blood pressure, heat (exposure to sun baths, saunas) and longer standing periods in specific physical activities, use of contraceptive pills, pregnancy and increased weight.

For severe conditions, the best option would be to resort to medical intervention. Currently, there are endovenous office based procedures that are highly effective in treating venous reflux, the underlying cause of varicose veins. For more information, please visit the website of our Los Angeles vein clinic, Nu Vela Esthetica.
